Virtual Machine Images
From MythTV Book
Installing a new operating system on your machine is a big commitment to make just to try out MythTV. In fact, sometimes its even inconvenient to reboot your machine to use it with a Live CD. To make trying MythTV easier, we provide a series of virtual machine images which you can use to trial various MythTV implementations.
MythBuntu 8.10
MythBuntu, as discussed in the The Easy Way: Installing MythBuntu chapter, is a specialized version of the Ubuntu Linux distribution. MythBuntu comes in the form of a Live CD, which if you reboot your machine you can boot from to give MythTV a try. If you like MythTV, you can then install exactly what is on the Live CD onto your computer's hard disk.
We provide the following virtual machine images for MythBuntu. These images were created as part of the process of developing the book itself, so if you use one of these, you should end up with exactly what is shown in the book chapters.
MythBuntu 8.10 VirtualBox
VirtualBox is an open source virtual machine system. To learn how to install VirtualBox, which is needed to use these images, please refer to our VirtualBox HowTo. You can download a VirtualBox hard disk image for MythBuntu 8.10 from http://www.mythtvbook.com/downloads/virtualbox_mythbuntu_8_10.tar.bz2 -- you'll then need to extract that file and setup a VirtualBox virtual machine to use it. The username for this disk image is mythbuntu and the password is myth.
